Description
This is an old industrial cast copper ingot made at the former White Pine copper mine at White Pine, Michigan.Larry Garfield was general mine superintendent in 1961 when he wrote an article describing the process of producing ingots; "The product of the refining furnace, containing 30 to 38 ounces of silver per ton of copper, is 99.93 to 99.98 pure."
It is marked "CR" for Copper Range, the owners of the property.
It weighs 68.4 pounds and is about 20 inches long, 3-3/4 inches wide and 3-3/4 inches thick.
There was a small lump of extra metal on the top of the casting that was ground down and shows as a bright copper spot.
It has nice color and a very sharp CR; only wiped it off with soapy water and a rag; some people clean them off with dilute acid and a wire brush to remove the oxidation.
These were being poured up until 1982 when the mine began producing pure copper by the electrolytic process.
See page 33 of my book for pictures and information,
White Pine Copper: An Illustrated History of the Mine and Its Ingots.
This book is available from my ebay store.
The White Pine mine produced over 4 billion pounds of copper and 45 million ounces of silver from 1955 to 1995.
